Kay Woltman Scholarship Recipient

Marne Foster - 4th year PhD ESJ

"I am exceedingly grateful to be a recipient of the Kay Woltman Scholarship because the support has been life-changing, in addition to the honor of receiving a scholarship that bears the name of such an incredible trailblazer and change agent. Without your generous support, I would not be able to pursue my PhD at this time at the University of San Diego."

Marne is currently enrolled in the School of Leadership and Education Sciences (SOLES) with a focus on Social Justice for Education, where she is a student ambassador and maintain a 4.0 Grade Point Average. Since embarking on this journey in 2020, she has co-created a summer social justice camp for San Diego youth, presented research on the school-to-prison pipeline as a part of SOLES Diversity & Inclusion Showcase, and conducted principal interviews and site observations at area public schools to study implicit bias and effective professional development models for school leadership. This semester she will continue to do research through principal interviews, with the added focus on public education policy.

Marne's dream is to complete her doctorate and utilize research to build experiential learning circles that would move school stakeholders to adjust their thinking, communication, policies, and practices to ones that foster measurable and more equitable outcomes for our most vulnerable students and their families.

W. Scott McIntyre Scholarship Recipient

Alexis Isaac

The financial support of the W. Scott McIntyre Scholarship has provided Alexis with the opportunity to focus on her education and skill development as a counselor. Without the scholarship, she would have spent the time available outside of her coursework and internship working; however, the W. Scott McIntyre Scholarship allowed Alexis to utilize that time to increase her education through training, volunteer as a teaching assistant, and participate in leadership opportunities, all of which support her end goal of continuing her education after her master's and becoming a counselor educator.

During the Fall semester alone, she attended 12 hours of training outside of her coursework, participated as a teaching assistant for a first-year course, attended one national conference for counselor education, and as Professional Development committee chair for Chi Sigma Iota, hosted/facilitated 3 professional development events for CMFT students at USD. The W. Scott McIntyre Scholarship made all of this possible and she continues to be grateful to the donors and selection committee.

W. Scott McIntyre Scholarship Recipient

Sara Alkhedairy

Receiving the financial support of the W. Scott McIntyre Scholarship has provided Sara with some financial stability in the midst of a very demanding school and practicum schedule. Without the support of this scholarship, Sara would not have been able to engage in the many professional and personal development opportunities offered through USD and neighboring institutions. During the Fall semester, Sara attended 22 hours of training outside of coursework focused on multiculturalism in counseling and techniques in narrative therapy, a theory that takes a social justice approach to mental health. Sara has had the opportunity to serve as the President of USD graduate student organization CAPE (Counselors Advocating and Pursuing Equity).

In this role, she developed the "FREE FLOW" conversation series, an open dialogue for students to discuss challenging topics around equity, multiculturalism, and cultural sensitivity in the counseling field. Sara is appreciative to be a recipient of this scholarship and extends her gratitude to the selection committee and scholarship funders.
