Yes, this certificate provides participants with all the skills and core competencies necessary for conducting effective coaching, no matter what one’s ultimate focus is as a coach.
You can complete the whole program in 12 months. The program starts each fall and we encourage you to complete it within the following 12 months in order to maintain continuity with the curriculum. The courses must be taken in sequence, starting with Foundations of Leadership Coaching first, which is offered each fall.
Our program must be completed in-person on campus. There are 5 courses in a specific sequence.
No, since the certificate program is not full-time, it does not qualify for international student visas.
Current USD graduate students should contact your faculty advisor to discuss how these courses fit your Graduate Program. Some students may need to exceed their required units for their degree if seeking this certificate. You can register without any additional paperwork, following standard course registration procedures. Upon registering for the practicum course, the department will add the Certificate to your academic record.
Current graduate students seeking graduate credit should register in the same manner in which they register for their other classes.
New students enrolled only in the certificate for graduate-level credit will receive information or registration from the Department of Leadership Studies.
Nondegree-seeking students are required to apply to the program and on acceptance register for one class at a time and pay via credit card. Courses currently open for registration will be made available to all admitted applicants during each registration period.

Those enrolling in Graduate Credit must follow the university guidelines for adding/dropping classes.
Non-credit participants - You may cancel 30 days or more prior to the starting date of the course, and your registration fee is refundable minus 5%. If you cancel between 30 and 14 days prior, we will refund 50% of the program fee. No refunds are possible less than 14 days prior to the starting date.
Alternatively, you are welcome to transfer your entire registration fee to a future course, one time only. Once a registration fee is transferred, it will not be eligible for a future refund or another transfer. Request for a transfer must be made prior to the start of the course and be completed within one year.
You may substitute another student in your place at any time prior to the start of the course at no cost (for the introductory course only).
Reimbursement for Canceled Courses
If we do not meet the minimum enrollment required to run a course, we reserve the right to
cancel it. Should this occur, all registration fees collected to date will be refunded. Though it is not typical for our programs to be canceled, to avoid confusion and disappointment, we suggest that participants who are traveling for the course secure insurance and/or refundable tickets.
No refund will be provided by USD on airline tickets or accommodations.
