Message from the Provost

Dear Colleagues,

I am writing to update you on USD’s response to the evolving Coronavirus (COVID-19) situation.  As President Harris stated in his campus email yesterday, we need to do everything we can to mitigate exposure to the virus and be prepared to respond to emergencies in a timely fashion.

USD has taken many proactive measures to protect our community. We are aware that members of our community are concerned about the spread of the coronavirus especially after the spring break, since many cases have been travel-related. In response to these concerns, many have asked about shifting courses online so that teaching can be achieved with minimal or no disruptions to students’ academic progress as the situation changes.

At present, there are no plans to cancel classes.  However, should that become necessary, we need to be prepared to teach online. I encourage you to become familiar with the resources provided by ITS to prepare for any emergency situation that might occur in response to CDC recommendations regarding the Coronavirus.

Here are some resources to consider:

  • ITS has prepared a web page regarding how to best utilize ITS tools. The focus of this webpage is how to use these tools for online teaching. (e.g., Zoom within Blackboard). They have also developed a resource regarding how to use Zoom with Blackboard

  • ITS workshops: Starting next week, ITS will be conducting in-person classes on this topic beginning Tuesday, March 10 at 12:10 pm in Maher, 114. There will also be several workshops over the next few weeks. These workshops are geared especially to faculty who are new to using Zoom and/or Blackboard. You can register for the workshops here.

*Please note that these workshops will also be available live via Zoom so that those who cannot attend in person can participate and ask questions. ITS will also post recorded videos of the workshop later next week on this webpage.

  • The information regarding how to join the workshops live via Zoom is posted below.

As the COVID-19 Action Team evaluates long-term planning, we encourage faculty and students to work together with their respective Dean’s office to manage the needs of those who must self-isolate and attend to health concerns.  For instance, one accommodation might be to suspend a mandatory attendance syllabus policy.  I encourage our community to remain adaptable in planning the remainder of the semester.

We will be monitoring this situation closely. Please be reminded of the COVID-19 website that contains relevant information and links to valuable resources. I will continue to update you as information becomes available.

Sincerely,

Gail F. Baker, PhD
Vice President and Provost
