Math Alumna Sara Vanaki On How USD Prepared Her for Graduate School

Math Alumna Sara Vanaki

Sara Vanaki graduated from the University of San Diego in 2023 with a bachelor of arts in mathematics and computer science. She is currently a graduate student pursuing her PhD in electrical and computer engineering at Rice University. Vanaki credits her undergraduate experience at USD as pivotal in shaping her academic journey.

“Being a math major at USD helped build the foundation for me to succeed in my engineering-based classes at Rice," Sara reflects. Her rigorous coursework at USD, particularly in proof-based classes, equipped her with essential problem-solving skills that have proven invaluable in her current studies. "A lot of my classes at Rice involve complex proofs and critical thinking, which I had already honed during my four years at USD," she explains. This background has empowered Sara to effectively tackle advanced research challenges in her field.

Sara offers practical advice to current students based on her own experiences. "Utilize the network of professors that USD has when looking for research and internship opportunities," she advises. Building strong relationships with faculty members can open doors to valuable learning experiences and professional connections. Additionally, she emphasizes the importance of attending office hours. "It's a great opportunity for professors to help you better understand concepts," Sara notes.

As Sara continues to pursue her PhD and contribute to her field, she remains grateful for the solid groundwork laid during her undergraduate years at USD. Her story serves as an inspiration to aspiring students navigating the intersection of mathematics and engineering, illustrating the profound impact of a well-rounded education and proactive academic approach.
