Celebrating the Graduating Class of 2026: Mercedes Valdez

Mercedes Valdez is graduating from the School of Law with a Master of Laws in U.S. Law with a concentration in Taxation.

Valdez was born in San Diego but grew up in Tijuana, Mexico. She earned her law degree from CETYS Universidad in Mexicali.

Valdez first heard about the University of San Diego after USD collaborated with CETYS on a litigation program for Mexican law students. After this program, she decided to pursue a Master of Laws degree in U.S. Law from the University of San Diego to learn about law on both sides of the U.S. Mexico border.

"My interest in law has always been there with me since I was a kid. I've always been passionate about defending others and helping guide them through their legal troubles," said Mercedes Valdez.

During her time at USD, Valdez worked at the USD Legal Clinics on tax cases. She was interested in being a part of the Legal Clinics to help others and also get more experience in U.S. law.

After graduating, Valdez will be moving to Texas where she hopes to focus on international tax law and apply her knowledge of Mexican and U.S. law practices.

 "Since I was a kid, I've been living in this dual U.S.-Mexico [world], I think I want to keep applying it to my career and...have both Mexico and U.S. law within myself," she added.

Mercedes Valdez se gradúa de la Facultad de Derecho con una Maestría en Derecho de los Estados Unidos (LL.M.) y una especialización en Derecho Fiscal. Aunque nació en San Diego, Mercedes creció en Tijuana, México, y obtuvo su licenciatura en Derecho en CETYS Universidad, campus Mexicali.

Supo de la Universidad de San Diego (USD) gracias a una colaboración entre USD y CETYS en un programa de litigio para estudiantes de derecho mexicanos. Tras participar en este proyecto, decidió cursar su maestría en USD con el objetivo de dominar las leyes de ambos lados de la frontera.

"Mi interés por el derecho ha estado presente desde que era niña. Siempre me ha apasionado defender a los demás y guiarlos en sus problemas legales", comentó Mercedes.

Durante su estancia en la universidad, trabajó en las Clínicas Legales de USD llevando casos de impuestos. Le motivaba la idea de ayudar a la comunidad y, al mismo tiempo, adquirir experiencia práctica en el sistema legal estadounidense.

Tras su graduación, Mercedes se mudará a Texas. Su meta es enfocarse en el derecho fiscal internacional, aprovechando su conocimiento integral de las prácticas legales tanto de México como de Estados Unidos.

"Desde pequeña he vivido en este 'doble mundo' entre México y Estados Unidos. Quiero seguir aplicando eso en mi carrera y llevar conmigo la esencia de las leyes de ambos países," añadió.
