Local Service Opportunities

Why make service a part of your faith journey? Its a good way to give back to people in need; a chance to build community and meet other people with similar values; ability to gain some perspective on what’s really important in life; learn something new about yourself, God, and our world; and boost positive emotions and overall mental health.

Dinner at Rachel's Night Shelter
Meet new friends – Eat a delicious homemade meal – Share in reflection

"True joy is born from encounter, from the relationship with others.  We must create a 'culture of encounter,' a culture of friendship, a culture in which we find brothers and sisters.  They all have something in common with us: they are images of God.” - Pope Francis

Once a month, USD students and University Ministry staff prepare and share dinner with residents at Rachel’s Night Shelter, a women’s homeless shelter in downtown San Diego.  Sitting down for a meal with the women is an invitation into encounter, as we each learn more about each other and ourselves.

If you are interested, please join us!! We begin preparing dinner on campus at 3pm, and will leave for Rachel’s at 4:30 (transportation is provided).  We will return to campus by 7pm. All USD students are welcome to join!
