In University Ministry, YOU are welcome! Did you know that the word catholic is an adjective for “all-embracing”? It denotes a collection of differences that - when put together - leads to wholeness and fullness. So, if you’re not Catholic and are wondering if you are welcome or can still find meaning in University Ministry, the answer is an enthusiastic yes!
Students of all faith traditions enliven our spaces. If you identify as a Muslim, Jew, Hindu or a member of another tradition, you are celebrated. If you identify with a different expression of Christianity, you are celebrated. If you are unsure of what you believe or how you feel about God or religion, you are celebrated. If you do not identify religiously, you are celebrated. If you identify as LGBTQ+ and fear you might not be accepted, you are celebrated (and you will be accepted).
We support all students in their spiritual exploration. University Ministry’s Masses, retreats, faith sharing groups, immersion experiences, and social gatherings are truly for everyone. Some of our most involved students identify with a non-Catholic faith tradition, and we are better for it!
To embody our commitment to interfaith and ecumenical engagement, University Ministry partners with USD Jewish Student Union/Hillel, collaborates with Muslim Student Association (MSA), and shares an office space with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. Annually, the Office of Mission Integration’s All Faith Service brings together Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Jewish, Muslim and indigenous faith traditions for an exquisite experience of inclusive prayer.
Finally, being people of faith means working toward justice and equity for all. Without teamwork and representation from every tradition, we cannot authentically build a world where each person is seen, heard, and valued.
We acknowledge that every faith expression is unique and beautiful. But, as a Catholic institution, we are certain that only by coming together can we better understand and deepen relationships with ourselves, one another, and the Divine.
So, if you are curious and have come to see,
if you are tired and have come to rest,
if you are grateful and have come to share,
if you are hurting and have come for comfort,
if you are listening and have come to pray,
if you are seeking and have come to be sought,
come be part of the University Ministry community.
Welcome home!
