The Learning Design Center is implementing the AI Assessment Scale (AIAS) to provide a modern framework that balances AI literacy with academic integrity. By moving away from unreliable detection tools, which can yield false positives up to 25% of the time, the AIAS focuses on maintaining assessment validity through transparent levels of AI integration. This approach acknowledges the reality that nearly 70% of students utilize AI tools regardless of abstinence policies, necessitating a shift toward assessments that align AI use with specific learning outcomes and disciplinary cultures.
To support this transition, the LDC will provide a comprehensive suite of guides, templates, and exemplars tailored for students, instructors, and subject matter experts (coming soon!). These resources will be designed to help faculty update assessments and rubrics while providing the necessary support for intervention and escalation. By clarifying course and program alignment on acceptable GenAI use, we meet the student demand for consistency and clarity at the assignment level. Ultimately, the AI Assessment Scale empowers the USD community to move beyond binary "prohibit or permit" mindsets, fostering an environment where authentic learning and critical thinking are preserved alongside the development of essential AI fluency.
