The AI Assessment Scale (AIAS) provides a practical framework for intentionally integrating or restricting the use of generative AI in assessments. Follow these four steps to apply the AIAS framework to an assessment in your course.
Put the AIAS Into Practice
Ready to apply the framework? Follow these four steps to select an AIAS level and integrate it into your assessment.
Step 1
Learn About the AIAS Framework
Start with an overview of the five AIAS levels and how they can guide assessment design. As you review the presentation, consider where generative AI fits into your course and how its use could affect student learning.
As you explore the framework:
- Review the five levels of the AI Assessment Scale.
- Consider how AI use could support or interfere with your learning outcomes.
- Identify what students need to demonstrate independently.
Step 2
Select an AIAS Level
Select an existing assessment from your course and determine the appropriate level of AI use. Then revise the assessment so that its purpose, instructions, and expectations align with that level.
You can use the AIAS GPT or Gem to:
- Brainstorm assessment ideas using the AIAS GPT or Gem
- Redesign assessment instructions
- Create or revise an assessment rubric
- Select the appropriate AI Interaction Log

[Brainstorm with the AIAS Gem (created by LDC)]
Remember that AI-generated recommendations are a starting point. Review and revise all content to ensure it aligns with your learning outcomes, disciplinary expectations, and course context.
Step 3
Apply the Level in Canvas
Add the redesigned assessment to your Canvas course. Clearly communicate:
- Add the appropriate AIAS level and assignment instructions to the assignment description
- How students must cite or disclose their use of AI
- Link the AI Interaction Log template
- Create and link the assignment rubric
Include the AIAS level and expectations in the assignment instructions and rubric so students can easily find and understand them.
Step 4
Communicate Expectations to Students
Ensure that the expectations communicated in the assessment are also reflected in your syllabus, course announcements and other relevant course materials. Provide students with consistent guidance about acceptable AI use, documentation or disclosure requirements, and the consequences of using AI outside the identified parameters.
Before publishing the assessment, review your Canvas course and syllabus to confirm that the language is clear, consistent, and aligned across all materials.
