Malachi Black came to USD in 2014 from Emory University, where he served as the Creative Writing Fellow in Poetry from 2013-2014. He earned his M.F.A. from the University of Texas at Austin’s Michener Center for Writers in 2010, and his Ph.D. in Literature with a Creative Writing emphasis from the University of Utah in 2014. The recipient of numerous awards and fellowships, Black is currently at work on his third collection of poetry, Theatrum Mundi; he is the author of two prior volumes: Indirect Light (Four Way Books, 2024) and Storm Toward Morning (Copper Canyon Press, 2014). He teaches a range of undergraduate courses, including Introduction to Poetry as well as Intermediate and Advanced Poetry Writing, and he assists with both the Cropper Writers Series and The Alcala Review, USD's campus literary journal.
Areas of Interest
Black’s teaching interests include poetry and poetry writing, prosody, the devotional lyric, epistolary forms, and contemporary engagement with literary-historical convention and technique.
