Critical Technology Studies (CTS)

Examining foundational issues in technology and its implications on our lives

Critical Technology Studies (CTS) brings together faculty and students from multiple disciplines across the university to ask questions about implications of technology for society, for the environment and for human experience. Venturing beyond the development of tools and acquisition of technical skills, we seek to better understand how technology shapes our lives, our communities and our relationships to one another and to the planet.

CTS includes an array of initiatives from public events and faculty working groups to curriculum development and student-led projects.

Featured project

Tech-Life Balance Competition

Implemented in collaboration with USD's Changemaker Hub and the national LookUp.live organization, the Tech-Life Balance Competition offers $8,000 to winning proposals for student-initiated projects that encourage reflection on the use of technology. In Fall 2019, students developed and presented proposals, and Nikta Shahbaz and Sara Badrani were awarded a grant to implement their Challenge Cookies project on campus.
