Africana Studies at USD prepares the next generation of experts in Black history and culture. Students learn about the peoples of Africa and the diaspora to understand historical culture in relation to society today.
Learning outcomes
- Garner a knowledge of the past and present realities of the people of the African diaspora in the United States, the Caribbean, Latin America, Europe and Africa.
- Interrogate the meanings and dimensions of slavery and colonialism, and their continuing political, social and cultural implications.
- Demonstrate an understanding of Black intellectual thought, literature, institutions and traditions of resistance across and within regional lines.
- Critically examine multiple systems of domination and the ways in which they intersect and converge with race and antiblackness to shape the Africana experience. These include gender, race, class, sexuality and ethnicity.
- Articulate both the complexity and contingency of the idea of "Blackness" and its deployment in a global context.
