Connecting You to Africa and the Peoples of the Diaspora

Sawubona! Welcome! Africana Studies is at its core a multifaceted appreciation of Black peoples. This includes the African continent, the wider diaspora and African-Americans. Africana Studies borrows from a wide range of disciplines in order to discuss, describe and debate the many contributions of Black peoples around the globe. A student who graduates from USD with a minor in Africana Studies will leave with a nuanced and interconnected understanding of Black thought, artwork and cultural production from a variety of geographical locations and methodological approaches.

Faculty and Staff

New Africana Studies Faculty Bring Transformative Perspectives to USD

USD Africana Studies welcomes three new faculty: Assistant Professor of History Olutoyosi "Toyo" Aboderin, PhD; Assistant Professor of Theology and Religious Studies Kyle Brooks, PhD; and Assistant Professor of Theology and Religious Studies Matthew Vega, PhD. Each brings unique expertise that encourages critical engagement with the historical and contemporary realities of Black life. Together, they offer transformative perspectives that challenge students to rethink race, religion and culture.
