Purpose: The purpose of the AI Student Experience Working Group is to assist in the development of a comprehensive, mission-aligned framework for the ethical, educational, and social integration of AI into the USD student experience. As a Catholic institution, and as we all work together to shape the emerging USD culture regarding technology use, our approach to Artificial Intelligence must be grounded in the belief that technology must serve and facilitate humanity, as well as the common good.
Charge
This working group will help ensure that AI adoption aligns with the USD strategic plan, Lighting the Way to 2030, enhances human flourishing, facilitates the ethical development of our students, while preserving the dignity of the individual, USD educational outcomes and core values. Regarding the latter, this working group will also help ensure that USD’s foundation in the liberal arts, as well as other institutional differentiators, are enhanced and not diminished by the use of technologies.
The Student Experience Working Group shall also:
- collaborate with Teaching and Learning on recommendations regarding updates to relevant academic policies such as the Honor Code, Academic Dishonesty and Responsible Use;
- help identify the implications of AI for student support systems and recommend ways AI might enhance such supports;
- help identify the implications for students’ career preparation and expectations of prospective employers;
- help identify baseline student AI proficiencies, literacies and norms;
- help identify equity/access implications of the use and adoption of AI;
- help identify spaces where students may explore/utilize AI tools;
- help identify students’ attitudes toward AI, including adoption of tools at USD (surveys, focus groups, etc.); and
- provide recommendations to the Steering Committee within the scope of the Working Group Charge.
In the execution of its charge, the following methods should be included:
- Benchmarking: Include peer and aspirational institutions
- Consultation (in-person, small groups, surveys)
- Inventorying: Identify what USD is already doing in these areas
