As a contemporary Catholic university, the University of San Diego is committed to confronting humanity’s most difficult challenges. In the current era of rapid technological advancement, Artificial Intelligence (AI) presents both a potential "gift of human creativity" and a complex challenge to human dignity.

Building upon our strategic plan, Lighting the Way to 2030, this Working Group is charged with developing a comprehensive framework for the ethical, legal, and administrative use of AI at USD. The goal is to ensure that AI serves the common good, enhances our "Culture of Care," and maintains the primacy of human judgment in all institutional decisions.

Charge

  • Recommend policies or investments for computing, data governance, research data management, and secure AI platforms that align with research needs and regulatory requirements.
  • Recommend process/plan for ensuring above-industry-standard levels of data security.
  • Recommend process/system for training.
  • Assess research infrastructure readiness, including data storage, computing resources, and AI tools available for faculty and labs.
  • Establish framework for AI procurement, vendor governance, and contract controls.

Tasks

  • Baseline environmental scanning: Identify what our peers and aspirational peers are doing in this area.
  • Consult (in-person, small groups, surveys).
  • Learn about what’s already happening at USD (Committees, Reports, Research Projects).
  • Listen for how people feel in general doing (Surveys, Focus Groups, etc).
  • Recommend (in simple memo) next steps to Steering Committee

Cadence

  • Working Group meeting frequency is at Chairs’ discretion, but substantive reports to be made at monthly Steering Committee meetings.
