Andy Cross was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1974. He attended the Maine College of Art in Portland where he received his BFA in photography in 1999. After finishing his undergraduate degree, he remained in Portland, Maine and continued to teach photography in adult education and worked in the commercial photography business. New England is where he first started his body of work and continued to travel across country to explore his photographic vision. With a strong interest and influence of the western landscape he pursued a MFA in photography at the San Francisco Art Institute. After completing his MFA in San Francisco, he moved to Los Angeles to work as a freelance photographer and continue his personal focus on the urban and rural American landscape. His photographs are published and exhibited nationally. He continues to work commercially when not teaching or working on his personal work. He now lives in San Diego and has taught Photography at colleges in San Francisco, Maine, and San Diego. He began teaching as an adjunct faculty at University of San Diego in 2006 and joined USD in 2013 as full time benefits-based photography instructor at the University of San Diego.

Areas of Expertise

Andy specializes in combining both digital and traditional photography practice. He sees the value in expanding the value of both for education and personal artistic expression. Andy works mostly with large format cameras and still prints color analog in his personal color darkroom at his home.

Professional Experience

Andy began teaching adult education as a photography instructor in 1999. He then began teaching at the College level in 2006 after receiving his MFA in 2005. Including his teaching work, he also worked at Macomber studios, Miahause studios and continues to work occasionally as an editorial and studio photographer in Los Angeles and San Diego.

All aspects of photography from traditional to the newest forms in digital software. Always interested in exploring the possibilities of the medium of photography to expand my knowledge and for students to have the opportunities to open there own artistic practice within a interdisciplinary department.
