In the spirit of creativity and dialogue

Theology and Religious Studies at USD provides multidisciplinary training in the exploration of religious meaning. We create opportunities for students to explore religion as a constitutive element of human experience and values, and to acquire skills for engaging diverse dimensions of religion with openness and respect.

Study at Oxford

USD Theology and Religious Studies majors with strong academic records are encouraged to expand their intellectual horizons through a semester's study abroad in Oxford, England. Participants in the St. Clare's and Blackfriars Hall Scholars' Programme are enrolled as "visiting students" at the University of Oxford. They take advantage of one-on-one tutorial instruction at Blackfriars, a permanent private hall of the University of Oxford, governed by the English Dominicans. Theology and philosophy are special strengths of this program. Instruction in Latin, Greek and Hebrew is available as well. Blackfriars scholars also take religious studies and other courses at St. Clare's, Oxford, for a full semester's credit toward their USD degree. For further information, see your advisor or visit the International Center, SH 315.

Sydney Pidgeon, '19 (BA)

Colombo Memorial Scholarship Recipient

"The impact of USD staff and faculty led me to pursue a career in higher education, and continue to invest in my alma mater. USD has named itself a 'contemporary Catholic institution' and leads the charge for what inclusive and equitable education can look like. Although I am proud of the work this institution has done, I will always push for more. My experience as a THRS major expanded my understanding of God and of Spirit, while enhancing my personal faith and commitment to justice and mercy."
