Dr. Nick Boyd is an Assistant Professor at the University of San Diego, and VA San Diego Lead Licensed Professional Mental Health Counselor (LPMHC) and Director of Clinical Training for Counseling. He received his M.A. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the University of San Diego and a Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision from the University of the Cumberlands.

As a Nationally Certified Counselor and Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) in California, Dr. Boyd has held various clinical, research, and leadership roles within the Department of Defense (DoD), Veterans Affairs (VA), and community settings. His diverse professional experience includes serving as an adjunct instructor in the Alcohol and Other Drug Studies program at San Diego City College, as well as being the Clinical Director and Co-Founder of e3 Civic High's school-based mental health counseling program, and a group practice member with the San Diego Cognitive Therapy Institute. He has also served as a board member and co-chair of the Legislative and Advocacy Committee for the California Association for Licensed Professional Clinical Counselors. In 2023, Dr. Boyd was appointed to the California Board of Behavioral Sciences by Governor Gavin Newsom as the LPCC member.

Dr. Boyd has served as an enlisted military police officer in both the Oregon and California Army National Guard. During his enlisted service, he held positions as a squad leader, honor guard member, and career counselor. He continues to serve in the California State Guard as a behavioral health officer, providing support to National Guard soldiers across California.

Dr. Boyd's current scholarship interests focus on barriers to care for National Guard service members and veterans, as well as stigma and unit cohesion. His clinical experience and interests encompass hoarding, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), anxiety, and depression, with particular expertise in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). He has completed advanced training and expert consultation in cognitive behavioral therapy and the assessment and treatment of PTSD. Dr. Boyd is credentialed by the VA in Cognitive Processing Therapy and has achieved Network Provider status in Prolonged Exposure and Written Exposure Therapy through the STRONG STAR Training Initiative. He is a recently recognized Diplomate with the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress.

Dr. Boyd maintains membership in good standing with several professional organizations, including the American Mental Health Counseling Association, California Association of Licensed Professional Clinical Counselors, American Academy for the Advancement of Science, International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies, American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress, Academy of Cognitive and Behavioral Therapy, Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies, American Counseling Association, and American Psychological Association.
