Dr. Juan Carlos Gonzalez is a community-engaged scholar-activist passionate about advancing mental health and educational equity. His research examines barriers to care and learning within historically minoritized communities and the ways that community-academic partnerships may serve to overcome these barriers. Drawing on both quantitative and mixed methods, his work spans topics including father engagement, substance use, and equity-centered implementation science.
At SOLES, Dr. Gonzalez teaches quantitative research methods and serves as a dissertation chair in the Education for Social Justice Ph.D. program. His teaching emphasizes critical approaches to data and the application of research for community change. He completed a combined Ph.D. in Counseling, Clinical, and School Psychology at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Drawing on his clinical experience in both California and New Mexico, he also cross-teaches in the Counseling and Marriage & Family Therapy Department.
