When did you begin your graduate program?

Expected Graduation Date
Spring 2025
What is your educational and professional background?
I received my Bachelor's of Science in Psychology from UCSD. During undergrad I was a research assistant for a psychology lab studying evidence-based practices. There, I was able to observe therapy sessions and code them for research data. My experiences in research led me to seek out more work in therapy, and eventually decide to apply to graduate school for marriage and family therapy. I also worked as an eating disorder counselor and a behavioral technician prior to attending USD.
Why did you choose USD? What made USD stand out in comparison to other schools with a similar program?
I chose USD because of the community. During the application process, the faculty really emphasized the importance they place on your learning and development in the field. There was so much guidance offered for practicum, and with the small cohort sizes I felt that I would be seen as an individual and not just another student. I was also interested in the small class sizes and the international requirement. I felt that USD was the best school to make me well-rounded, competent therapist.
What do you hope to do after grad school?
I am interested in working in a variety of settings after graduate school. My biggest goal is to help populations that have experienced trauma, such as first responders and veterans.
Are you currently working? If so, do you work full-time or part-time, and what do you do?
I am currently a part-time graduate assistant for a professor within the MFT program. I help with book editing and research. It's been a great way to become more immersed in the program and find connections!
What are you most excited for as you begin your program?
I am most excited to gain confidence as an MFT. USD has such amazing faculty and so much guidance to pull from. I am looking forward to learning from everyone and translating that knowledge into my future practice.
What advice can you share with prospective applicants?
Remember your goals! Applying to graduate school can be so overwhelming and the process can sometimes feel more like numbers and essays. Remember your passions and how your experiences have shaped you, and let that show during the application process. Also reach out to your resources if you have any questions!
