What is your educational and professional background?
I have a bachelor's degree in public health (APU) and a master's in organizational leadership (Point Loma Nazarene), along with a graduate certification in case management (UC San Diego). I have worked in higher education since 2015 in numerous student support roles.
Why did you choose USD? What made USD stand out in comparison to other schools with a similar program?
I chose USD because of the Social Justice concentration. I work in EDI and have served my community through many education initiatives. I have always wanted to research ways to make my community better. USD's sense of community that you feel here and the support that is provided made USD an easy choice for me. I didn't feel overwhelmed or just like a number in a program, like other programs. The Torero community makes you feel welcomed and valued.
What do you hope to do after grad school?
I hope to become an Assistant Professor in Social Justice, Culture, Critical Theory, etc., and also write grants for summer enrichment programs that serve underrepresented students.
Are you currently working? If so, do you work full-time or part-time, and what do you do?
I work full-time in higher education as a Program Manager in Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI). Some of my responsibilities are community outreach, student recruitment, curriculum development, and co-chair of our Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion committee.
What are you most excited for as you begin your program?
My cohort is amazing! I enjoy working with the small cohort that we have in the PHDSJ program and the topics we cover.
What advice can you share with prospective applicants?
I would say, just first, "Trust the process." Do your research and make sure that the program you want speaks to you and what you want to do. I looked at programs for 2-3 years before I chose USD. A Ph.D. program in general will take a lot out of you and fully transform your life, but if you're committed then definitely go for it and know that you are good enough!
