Why did you choose USD? What made USD stand out in comparison to other schools with a similar program?
An alumna recommended to check out USD and I reached out to Professor Donmoyer who specializes in Conflicting Conceptions of Leadership, Knowledge, and Research; The Policymaking Process; Qualitative Research Methods; and, Mixed-Methods Research Design, which aligned with my interest. Dr. Donmoyer generously explained to me about the program through the Zoom meeting. Also, USD provides evening classes for working students which is very important for me.
What are your professional goals?
I would like to lecture part-time while working full-time in biotechnology. I also would like to continue doing research on leadership studies related to biotechnology.
Favorite thing about your program:
I met so many amazing groups of diverse and talented scholars. The faculties are there providing support for my class projects and dissertation guidelines. I like that each class is like a tool, a skill set that helps me to do my dissertation.
Have you completed an international experience? What did you do?
No, I have not. There are so many wonderful places I want to go. However, I am going to go to Cambodia in January 2025. Dr. Donmoyer will lead the class for 9 days.
How would you describe the culture at SOLES?
At SOLES, you are not alone. We are very supportive of one another. We come from different cultures, backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. We are a diverse group of students and those differences are our strengths. We are like a tight-knit family. Please reach out to one of us, and we can answer your questions.
Are you currently working? If so, do you work full-time or part-time, and what do you do? How do you balance work, school, and personal life?
I am currently working full-time. I work as a technician at biotech company.
What internships assistantships, volunteer work, or fieldwork have you done through SOLES? How has it impacted you?
Due to full-time work and school, so far I have not able to do any fieldwork with SOLES.
Which class has impacted you the most? Why?
I would say Literature Review because searching for academic articles that relate to your dissertation topic, and then scholarly synthesize. It takes a lot of time to search for, read, analyze, and scholarly write it. However, it is a very important process, part of a PhD student's journey.
How has the SOLES faculty, staff, or administrators contributed to your success in grad school so far?
Without their support, I would not last as far.
What advice can you share with prospective students?
If you are not too far from San Diego, come and check out our campus. If you are outside California or overseas, please reach out to the admission office or student ambassador. We are here to answer any question
