Preparing students for success in educational research and academia

The University of San Diego's (USD) School of Leadership and Education Sciences (SOLES) participates in the AACTE Holmes Scholars Program as a member institution of the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE). The USD SOLES Holmes Scholars Program supports doctoral students who self-identify as racially and ethnically diverse and are pursuing graduate degrees in education. The program provides mentorship, peer support and professional development opportunities for those interested in faculty and leadership roles in the field of education.

Students eligible to become Holmes Scholars are:

Self-identified as a racial or ethnic minority

Enrolled as a first or second year doctoral students of color at USD SOLES

Clearly stated educational, career and scholarship goals that are aligned with AACTE

Meet other requirements, as specified in the Holmes Scholars Program application

Cheryl E. Matias

Dr. Matias is a professor in SOLES' Department of Learning and Teaching. She received the 2020 Mid-Career Award for her work on racial justice in teacher education at the American Educational Research Association. Link to bio

Abel Macias

Abel is a SOLES graduate student in the PhD in Education for Social Justice program. His research is focused on the oral history of the murals at Chicano Park and its use in the classroom.
