Biography
The focus of my research is patient education and health communication. Specifically, I study the use of tailored information visualization to support comprehension of personal health information, particularly for people with low health literacy and limited English proficiency. Cultural congruence is an important goal of the work.
Tailoring of infographics usually requires software, so I work closely with colleagues in software engineering to create bespoke software solutions.
My methods draw from human-centered design, information design, and human-computer interaction and are primarily qualitative. They include participatory design, heuristic evaluation, usability testing, think-aloud protocols, focus groups, and interviews.
I also have experience in psychometric measurement with both classical test theory and to a more limited extent, item-response theory and structural equation modeling.
