Oliver Tarvet’s Wimbledon Run Inspires Torero Nation

The two-time defending Wimbledon champion and perhaps the best player in the world – Carlos Alcaraz – had just won the match, but all eyes were on Oliver Tarvet ‘26.

The USD Men’s Tennis player grew up down the road from Wimbledon, and now here he was getting a standing ovation on Centre Court.

“All his coaches should be proud. San Diego should be proud,” said ESPN commentator and former pro James Blake. “He’s represented all of them very, very well today.”

As Tarvet made his way off the court, soaking in the applause, taking photos and signing autographs, his opponent took a moment to recognize him as well.

“I just love his game, to be honest,” said Alcaraz, currently ranked No. 2 in the world. “The level that he played in his first match on Centre Court, I know that’s really difficult, and he played great tennis.”

The moment was a recognition and culmination of a Cinderella run on tennis’ biggest stage.

Tarvet took in the moment at Centre Court, but is already looking ahead to the Fall. The rising senior was quick to say he plans to return to USD to improve his game and take care of unfinished business.

“The amount of dedication, passion and devotion from the coaches, my teammates and everyone behind the scenes has been incredible,” Tarvet said. “I have a lot of personal and team goals that I haven’t achieved at USD. College has been such a big part of my career and my life. There’s definitely some things I want to achieve before I go pro full-time.”
