USD Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry Dr. Joseph Provost Honored as 2025 ASBMB Fellow
USD Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry Joseph Provost, PhD, was recently named as a 2025 Fellow of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB). ASBMB is a 100-year-old community of 11,000 members dedicated to advancing molecular life sciences through research, education and advocacy. As an ASBMB Fellow, Dr. Provost is being recognized for his exceptional and sustained service to ASBMB and his distinguished record of professional accomplishments to advance molecular life sciences.
“I am honored to be recognized for my service over the years, but what is most meaningful to me is receiving this award at the annual meeting where some of my research students will be present. Our students are the reason we dedicate so much effort at ASBMB and USD—to create an environment where they can achieve more than they ever imagined,” said Dr. Provost.
In his nomination letter, Dr. Provost’s biochemistry colleagues from across the nation highlighted his research focused on the role of transport proteins in cell motility and tumor progression, which has been supported by several grants from the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation. They also noted his longstanding service to the society as Chair of the ASBMB Student Chapters Committee for five years as well as his membership on the Educational and Professional Development Committee and the Membership Committee. Dr. Provost was also previously recognized with the ASBMB Exemplary Contributions to Education Award in 2022.
Chair and Associate Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry Jessica Bell, PhD, noted, “Joe embodies the teacher-scholar model – he brings innovative pedagogy to his classroom to engage and empower our students, and in his research laboratory, he places our students at the center of cutting edge research in fields ranging from cancer to metabolism. Being named an ASBMB Fellow is a wonderful celebration of his many accomplishments and a reflection of our department’s excellence.”
Dr. Provost will be one of 24 ASBMB Fellows honored at a ceremony and reception on April 13th during the 2025 annual meeting of the ASBMB in Chicago, IL. “I am proud to represent USD, an institution with so many outstanding faculty and staff. Any recognition that highlights the incredible work happening at our university is something I deeply value,” he shared.
