Alumnus Graham Hendrick ‘20 (BA) shares reflections from his experience as a history major as well as where his journey has taken him since graduating from USD.

Hendrick emphasizes the profound impact of his history studies. "Studying history at USD not only provides a richer understanding of the past but also helps its students cultivate fundamental skills like critical thinking, analytical skills, a deep appreciation for diverse cultures and perspectives, and a sense of civic duty," he said.

Hendrick particularly appreciates the engaging coursework, thought-provoking discussions with peers and professors and in-depth research opportunities offered to students. He believes that these experiences give students the tools to navigate the complexities of the present – in their personal and professional lives. What he seems to miss most, however, is the community. “I fondly remember the tight knit community we had, especially in our thesis classes with all of our fun discussions and varied community events," he shared.

After earning his degree, Hendrick immediately pursued law school, a decision he views as fortuitous given the timing of his graduation. "In hindsight, this was fortunate as I graduated in 2020, but otherwise I would recommend that anyone considering law or grad school take a year or two after undergrad," he advised. He believes that gaining experience through work or travel can significantly strengthen a graduate school application.

Hendrick graduated from law school in May 2023 and has since been working as a corporate transactional attorney with a focus on intellectual property. Looking ahead, he plans to continue at his current firm for the next few years but envisions transitioning to another legal career, ideally back in San Diego.
