USD School of Law Adjunct Professor Andrew Haden ʼ08 (JD) Receives National Federal Bar Association Award

SAN DIEGO (November 1, 2024) - Congratulations to University of San Diego (USD) School of Law Adjunct Professor Andrew Haden ‘08 (JD) who received the Peter. J. Mazza Outstanding Federal Lawyer Award from the Federal Bar Association (FBA).

The Peter J. Mazza Outstanding Federal Lawyer award, named in honor of beloved former First Assistant U.S Attorney and former San Diego FBA President Pete Mazza, is reserved for attorneys with exceptional dedication to public service. The award, which includes a charitable donation in the name of the recipient, is a memorial to the outstanding, inspirational, and selfless leadership that Pete Mazza demonstrated throughout his life.

Haden was an officer in the U.S. Navy from 2000-2005. After graduating from USD School of Law, Haden clerked for U.S. District Judge Thomas J. Whelan ‘61 (BA), ‘65 (JD), and then joined the U.S. Attorney’s Office through the Department of Justice Honors Program. His titles throughout his career, besides First Assistant U.S. Attorney and Acting U.S. Attorney, include Criminal Chief, Violent Crimes & Human Trafficking Section Chief, Trial Team Leader, Senior Litigation Counsel, and Project Safe Neighborhoods Coordinator. He is also a longtime participant in Project LEAD and the Veteran’s Diversion program. His professional commitment to public safety is evidenced by his investigations and prosecutions into violent crime, public corruption, firearms trafficking, and child exploitation. 

Haden has received many honors including: Southern District of California Trial Lawyer of the Year, 2017; Federal Bar Association Younger Federal Lawyer Award, 2017; San Diego Metro Magazine’s 40 Under 40, 2017; and in 2020, the nationwide Director’s Award for Superior Performance in a Managerial or Supervisory role from the Executive Office for United States Attorney’s for “extraordinary leadership contributions” to the Department of Justice from 2016-2019.

Haden teaches human trafficking law at USD School Law. He is the winner of the 2007 Paul A. McLennon Sr. Honors Moot Court Competition and is a 2016 Rising Star Recent Alumni Award honoree. Hadenwas on the USD Law Alumni Association Board of Directors, 2012-2016, and is the current Chair of USD Law’s Nominating Committee.
