Chaney Wollaston: Class of 2022 Valedictorian
"We have overcome so much as a class which has only made us closer, stronger and more well-rounded individuals,” says Chaney Wollaston ’22 (BBA/BACC), the Knauss School of Business Class of 2022 Valedictorian. “Our experience at USD is something that has influenced our past, our current and our future identity.”
Prior to finals, Wollaston, an Accounting and Business Economics major and a Business Analytics minor, took a few minutes to talk about her unique experiences at USD, her reaction to being named valedictorian, and her plans for the future.
How did you learn that you were awarded valedictorian and what was your reaction?
I was so surprised when they told me. I thought I was attending a Zoom meeting to express my opinion on my experience at USD. I even had a little note sheet prepped for the meeting. I was dumbfounded for around 10 minutes. I think the way they told me will always remain as a special moment in my heart.
What does this honor mean to you?
I am beyond grateful to have been granted the honor. After I found out, I immediately called my family and roommates to tell them because I was so excited. I remember wanting this since Professor [Mark] Judd told me my sophomore year that he could see me becoming the future valedictorian. It feels good to know that hard work and dedication always pay off and that I have people in my corner rooting for me to succeed.
What brought you to USD?
I am originally from a small town in Illinois. I always knew I wanted to leave the Midwest, so I applied to many random schools in California, Florida and Texas. I originally heard about USD because my favorite social studies teacher attended a conference at USD when I was still in high school. She showed me a picture of the campus and was raving about how amazing San Diego was. When I attended the college tour, I knew that USD was my future home. To this day, I am beyond grateful that fate brought me here.
What clubs and organizations were you involved with at USD?
I have served as the President of the Economics Council, VP of Finance for Beta Alpha Psi, VP of Scholastics and Awards for Delta Sigma Pi, and a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma.
What are your plans after graduation?
I am spending the summer studying for and taking the CPA exam and running my first marathon. In September, I will be starting as an Audit staff at EY in San Diego. I hope to venture into forensic accounting at EY later on.
