USD School of Law Alumnus Matthew Caron ʼ06 (JD) Appointed as Contra Costa County Superior Court Judge

Matthew Caron

University of San Diego (USD) School of Law alumnus Matthew Caron ʼ06 (JD) has been appointed to the Contra Costa County Superior Court by California Governor Gavin Newsom. Caron was selected to fill the judicial vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Mary Ann O'Malley.

Since this Superior Court appointment fills a mid-term vacancy, Caron is eligible to take the bench immediately without requiring a formal confirmation hearing from the Commission on Judicial Appointments, though he will eventually stand for standard nonpartisan retention elections.

Caron brings a strong background in oral advocacy and trial work to the bench, having been inducted into The Order of Barristers—a national honor society recognizing exceptional skills in brief writing and courtroom advocacy—during his time at USD School of Law.

Caron served as a Deputy District Attorney at the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office since 2010. He served as a Deputy City Attorney for the San Diego Office of the City Attorney from 2007 to 2010. He began his career as an associate at Lincoln, Gustafson & Cercos from 2006 to 2007 before transitioning to public service.
