Math Majors Awarded for Outstanding Achievement and More

By Laney Green

Ahead of commencement every year, the Department of Mathematics chooses seniors and standout majors to honor at the college and department level. These awards reflect the students' hard work, service and overall achievement in the mathematics major. This year, the math department faculty hand-picked six students to recognize.

Three students were awarded at the college level and invited to the 2026 Undergraduate Honors Convocation that took place on Tuesday, May 7. Computer Science and Math Major Andrew Albizati, Electrical Engineering and Math Major Luke Fischer, and Physics and Math Major Lila Fowler were all awarded for Outstanding Achievement in Mathematics and accepted their certificates on-stage in Shiley Theatre.

“Throughout my four years at USD, I've spent a lot of time getting to know all of the faculty in the math department, whether it be through office hours or an occasional ice cream social,” Albizati said. “I feel very well connected to the math community at USD and it was an honor to receive this award knowing that I had the support from all these amazing faculty members I've met and learned from over the years.”

The remaining three students were honored at the department’s annual end of the year party amongst fellow majors, minors, friends and faculty. Senior Math majors Madison Gambon and Anjana Yalagonda were honored with Outstanding Service in Mathematics and Outstanding Transfer Scholar in Mathematics, respectively. Junior Eden Tripp, a computer science and math major, was also awarded for her service to the department as president of the math club and math playroom assistant.

“One of the hardest things for faculty to do is choose who to give awards to,” explained Department Chair Satyan Devadoss, PhD.” There’s so much struggle and heartbreak that goes on that we don’t see, so these awards are a reflection of what we do see. Each of these students were exceptional in their academic pursuits and made the department better.”

Congratulations to our six honorees and our entire 2026 class– your future has only just begun!
