USD Launches Full-time On-campus Master’s Degree Programs in Applied Artificial Intelligence and Cyber Security Engineering

With the expansive fields of artificial intelligence and cybersecurity continuing to grow at extraordinary rates, the University of San Diego (USD) is pleased to announce the launch of full-time on-campus formats for its innovative Master of Science in Applied Artificial Intelligence (MS-AAI) and Master of Science in Cyber Security Engineering (MS-CSE) programs. Developed and led by the Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering, these full-time programs will welcome their first incoming classes in September 2026.

As industries worldwide contend with the rapid integration of AI and the escalating complexity of cyber threats, the Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering is expanding and presenting its proven curriculum to a traditional, face-to-face environment. These new options allow students to benefit from the university’s state-of-the-art facilities and direct collaboration with world-class faculty.

“Our goal with these two new on-campus programs is to bring the hallmarks that made each of these programs thrive in the online space–innovation and applied teaching methods–and offer them in an immersive, in-person experience.”
―Chell Roberts, PhD Founding Dean, Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering

MS in Applied Artificial Intelligence (MS-AAI) Originally launched as an online-only program in 2021, USD’s MS-AAI has distinguished itself through its emphasis on applied teaching methods and a cutting-edge curriculum that evolves to match the constantly changing needs of the field. Widely recognized by ranking outlets such as Fortune, Tech Guide and IT Career Finder, the program prepares graduates for high-level roles including AI Engineer, RPA Engineer and Lead Data Scientist.

The on-campus MS-AAI is designed to be completed in 16 months (30 units). The curriculum focuses on ethics, mathematical foundations, and real-world applications, ensuring students can design, evaluate and implement AI solutions that are both effective and socially responsible.

MS in Cyber Security Engineering (MS-CSE) The MS-CSE program has been designated as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cybersecurity by the federal government. This designation recognizes a robust curriculum aligned with the NICE Cybersecurity Workforce Framework. Unlike general IT security programs, USD’s MS-CSE emphasizes a mission-centric focus on the engineering aspects of software and hardware security.

The full-time on-campus MS-CSE consists of 36 units completed over four semesters. It is specifically designed for industry professionals and bachelor-prepared students who want to develop and deploy sophisticated engineering solutions to mitigate global cybersecurity threats.

With the launch of the full-time on-campus format the MS-CSE program now offers three different formats allowing students to select the path that works best for them. Whether that be online, on-campus part-time or on-campus full-time. All formats deliver the same high-quality curriculum and prepare students with the technical and practical skills needed for careers in cybersecurity.

Program Highlights and Structure
Both programs offer a streamlined path to degree completion while allowing students to maintain a balance between academic rigor and practical experience:
