Beyond NAGPRA: Reimagining Repatriation as Community-Centered Healing
The Center for Cultural Development and the Ethnic Studies Department at the University of San Diego (USD) and the Qawalangin Tribe of Unalaska, invite you to join us for a lecture and conversation on March 18th, 2026 from 12:20 - 1:15 (PST) / 11:20 - 12:15 (AKST).
This event will be held virtually (Zoom) and is the third opportunity to share information of the progress of repatriation efforts at the University of San Diego. The current event will feature a 40 minute lecture by Carter Chiiluusanax̂ Price (NAGPRA Coordinator, Qawalangin Tribe of Unalaska) and Aaron Young (NAGPRA Repatriation Manager, University of San Diego), followed by a 15-minute window for questions.
This lecture and conversation are part of a new relationship between the Qawalangin Tribe and the University of San Diego and is centered around moving beyond the transactional return of repatriatable ancestors and objects. By examining the origins of early ‘preservation’ and ‘salvage’ aims of collecting, we can better understand why physical return is only the first step in a much larger journey toward community-led healing. Carter and Aaron will discuss a current case in which repatriation serves as a bridge for intergenerational and intercommunity knowledge transfer and the revitalization of traditional practices, transforming repatriation from a legal requirement into a community-focused, collaborative process.
This event is open to all members of the campus community and the general public.
A reminder email will be sent out approximately one week before the event.
