University of San Diego’s College of Arts and Sciences is proud to announce the publication of Professor Emerita María Pilar Aquino, S.T.D.'s new book, Enfoques Feministas de Transformación Intercultural: Religión, violencia sexual y construcción de la paz (Feminist Approaches to Intercultural Transformation: Religion, Sexual Violence and Peacebuilding). This significant work was published as a joint effort between the USD College of Arts and Sciences and Pontificia Universidad Javeriana.
The book explores themes central to Dr. Aquino’s distinguished career, which included service on the USD Theology and Religious Studies faculty from 1993 to 2018. The publication, as its title suggests, delves into feminist theological practices regarding religion, sexual violence and peacebuilding within an intercultural religious framework for constructive transformation.
Dr. Aquino was named professor emerita in 2019. Throughout her career, her primary areas of teaching and research have been liberation theologies, social ethics and feminist theologies, with a strong focus on intercultural approaches and religious peacebuilding studies. Even in retirement, she continues to serve on national and international editorial boards of prominent theological journals.
Dr. Aquino is widely recognized for her pioneering work in Latin American and U.S. Latina feminist theologies of liberation. She is a co-founder and served as the first woman president of the Academy of Catholic Hispanic Theologians of the United States. She also served as the first Latina woman president of the Catholic Theological Society of America.
