Kevin Guerrieri joined the faculty in 2002. He teaches courses on Latin American literature and culture as well as all levels of the Spanish language. His areas of research include Latin American literature and cultural production, specializing in Colombian narrative and scholarship of engagement. Guerrieri has served as department chair, chair of the University Senate and president of the international Asociación de Colombianistas. He is a faculty liaison for the Mulvaney Center for Community, Awareness, and Social Action, and faculty co-director of Impact Linda Vista Initiative (ILVI). He has broad experience teaching in study-abroad programs (in Antigua, Guatemala; Buenos Aires, Argentina; Guadalajara, Mexico; Barcelona and Madrid, Spain), and he is a recipient of USD’s Innovation in Experiential Education Award.

Scholarly Work

Guerrieri’s publications include the co-edited volume Human Rights in Colombian Literature and Cultural Production: Embodied Enactments (2022), which explores a diversity of themes and genres of representation present in critical aesthetic approaches to violations of human rights as well as the structural and symbolic violence that perpetuates them. His book Palabra, poder y nación: la novela moderna en Colombia de 1896 a 1927 (2004) is an exploration of multiple discourses of modernity in Colombia at the intersection of national formation, projects of physical modernization and the aesthetics of literary modernismo. Other publications have appeared in Revista IberoamericanaHispania, Visitas al Patio: Revista de Estudios de Lingüística y Literatura, Engaging Pedagogies in Catholic Higher Education, International Journal of Research on Service-Learning and Community Engagement and Journal of Community Engagement and Higher Education, among other journals.

Areas of Interest

Guerrieri’s teaching and research involve interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches, and his courses integrate community engagement and collaboration with community partners. In addition to literary and cultural analysis, his interests include human rights, social justice education and critical pedagogy.
