Anchor Institution

Higher education institutions are critical local economic and intellectual engines linked to the long-term well-being of their home communities. Because of their commitment to and investment in their communities, higher education leaders are positioned to play more active roles in supporting local economies, advancing racial equity, and reversing legacies of exclusion and disinvestment (Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities).

For over thirty years, USD faculty and students have engaged in meaningful ways with community partners. In order to set the standard for an engaged, Contemporary Anchor Catholic University in 2024, we must strengthen and expand partnerships that confront the urgent challenges of our local community. To that end, USD will intentionally invest resources to improve access to quality K-12 education, enhance economic development, promote health care, and serve as a catalyst for local community development.
