Jane Friedman, PhD, is also the coordinator for the approved subject matter program in mathematic which prepares future high-school mathematics teachers. She has current research projects in voting theory and in statistics.
Scholarly Work
Dr. Friedman has worked in a number of areas of mathematics, including combinatorics, voting theory, math education and statistics.
In combinatorics, her work has centered on integer partitions. An integer partition is an expression of a positive integer as the sum of other integers. The work often involves trying to count partitions of different types.
In voting theory, Dr. Friedman has had the pleasure of working with other members of the department, Dr. Bean, Dr. McGrath and Dr. Parker. Our work was on measuring power in different kinds of voting systems.
Dr. Friedman loves children's literature. She has written a paper that shows different examples of using children's literature to teach mathematics. She has also published work that describes other activities she has used in her classes.
Dr. Friedman helped develop a method of fitting models to data. The method can be used to fit models with a changepoint.
Areas of Interest
Friedman has taught a wide range of undergraduate mathematics courses, including lower division courses and core classes and upper division courses for majors. Friedman also enjoys working one-on-one with students on individual projects.
