Printers@USD

ITS manages an amazing 600+ printers on campus that can be either networked or locally installed on our customers’ computers.  Through our network managed print services we can improve the quality of services through standardization, proactive management and maintenance of devices.

Sharp Managed Print Services

To make our services more streamlined, provide faster and efficient technology, and a more productive environment for our community, we have partnered with Sharp Business System for Managed Print Services to provide quick efficient service for toner replacement and repairs. If you would like to learn more, please visit our Sharp Managed Print Services page.

ITS Support for Printers@USD

In order to maintain our service level, we have services that we support and other services that are not efficient or provide adequate data security.

Supported by ITS

  • Managed network printing allows us to remotely fix issues with the printer and connections to the printers. Therefore, all printers that can be networked must be network managed.  ITS will not connect a printer locally (i.e. via USB).
  • We can connect your USD-owned laptop or desktop to a USD-owned network printer.
  • If you are part-time, adjunct, a visiting professor, or student worker, and need to access a printer please talk with your Department Chair or Director about setting up a consultation with ITS to see how we can assist.
  • Scan-to-Email features are enabled on all printers that are capable of scanning (MFPs).
  • Faxing services are enabled on printers with a fax module installed.
  • PIN Printing and PIN Release Printing can be enabled on all Sharp Printers to provide security and accountability.
  • You can use a flash drive to print from Sharp printers.
  • We can assess the need for a Wepa Cloud Printing Solution for students to be able to print classwork, if there is already not one nearby.

NOT Supported by ITS

  • Connecting any non-USD-owned computer to a USD-owned printer is strictly prohibited for security and reliability reasons.
  • Mobile Device Printing is strictly prohibited.  iOS and Android devices cannot print directly on campus due to security and accountability issues when connecting to printers.
  • Connecting a Wi-Fi-enabled printer to EduRoam. Printers do not have the security features that EduRoam requires to get them online.
  • Bluetooth printing is not supported due to the lack of security and accountability when directly connecting to the printer.

Exceptions

Any exceptions to our supported print services need to be approved before we recommend, order a printer, or install any printer.  ITS would request that a department chair or director reach out by emailing prp@sandiego.edu to request a consultation about your unique situation. Do keep in mind that these policies are to keep the campus safe and secure from a cybersecurity and IT Service Management perspective with accommodation already made for the needs of the university and its departments.

Need Printer Support?

If you need support for your printer, please contact the Help Desk by phone at (619) 260-7900 or email us at help@sandiego.edu. You will be asked to give your contact information, the location of the printer, the Printer’s name which will be on a black and white sticker on the fascia, and a short description of the details of your call.

Paperless Solutions

ITS would like to encourage everyone to look at paperless solutions as an alternative to upgrading their printing needs.  Some of the key benefits of a paperless office include:

  • Cost Savings
  • Organized Work Environment
  • Better Efficiency
  • Secure Data and Document Keeping

Creating a paperless environment will mean committing to change the processes you currently use. It might also be important to invest in learning some of the different paperless or cloud services USD offers.

Google Drive will allow you to collaborate without the need for physical printing of documents.  You can just share the document you created with only the people you want to share it with. At USD, Google Drive is encouraged for use between all administrators, staff, faculty, and even students.  Sharing documents for a course's projects can work just as well between students as it can help advising with faculty.

Blackboard (ole.sandiego.edu) is a wonderful resource for faculty and students to collaborate at USD.  It allows for course work to be uploaded so that students can access syllabuses, quizzes, testing materials, PowerPoint Presentations, and any other file you may need to share with them, without the need to print copies for everyone. If you would like to learn more about this service please visit our Blackboard page.

The Learning Design Center (LDC) is there to facilitate the needs of faculty and staff in the development of Blackboard curriculum. If you would like to set up time to consult with a member of the LDC or troubleshoot Blackboard problems, the easiest way is to email them at ldcsupport@sandiego.edu.

ToreroMail is perhaps the most simple way to communicate with others and send them documents, rather than print and walk a physical piece of paper to the next person. If you keep emails digital, it keeps them secure as well.

Scan to Email can help reduce clutter of paper.  Digitizing a document means that it can be signed and sent through Adobe Acrobat Pro, or you can make your documents travel with you by adding the scanned PDFs to Google Drive.

PDF webviews can help you not print a document that is unnecessary.  You can use Adobe Acrobat Reader in Chrome, FIrefox, Edge, and IE for Windows, and with MacOS the Preview app is a good resource.
