I fell in love with San Diego itself when I visited. Also, I heard the campus culture was collegial and I could see myself at the school.
I developed an interest in environmental studies and renewable energy in college as early as 2012. I became interested in the legal side of environmental and renewables around 2017.
Worked at a real estate law firm representing lenders in debt finance transactions. Now at a renewable energy development company as real estate counsel.
In preparing for my current job, I think the most important aspect was focusing on energy/environmental- related internships (most found through the school, but not all) and classes. Another huge factor was doing internships tangential to energy and the environment, such as real estate and corporate internships and classes, because environmental and energy is broad and can pull on other areas of law that are not directly on point. I tried to do an internship every semester and every summer to become marketable.
Pursue as many energy and environmental work experiences you can, but consider what areas of law may be tangential to the practice you want to be in, in case you can't get an internship that is directly on point. Energy and environmental can pull from a lot of different areas of law (real estate, corporate, policy, etc.). Make sure there is purpose in the internships you choose, be strategic. For what I would have done differently, I think being more willing to leave San Diego for a summer, as a lot of those great energy/environmental experiences can be elsewhere.
