USD Law has exceptional faculty and staff in a stunning location. The school also supports public interest-oriented students through the Center for Public Interest Law, EPIC, and funding unpaid internships.
Driven by a passion for environmental protection, I pursued an undergraduate degree in Marine Science. After graduation, I worked in the lake and wetland sector, where I frequently wrote regulatory reports to meet state and local environmental laws. This became my favorite aspect of the job and ultimately inspired me to pursue a legal career.
I founded a nonprofit called EarthSpotter, a platform addressing the lack of transparency in environmental reporting. State and federal data reporting programs lack user-friendly interfaces and mechanisms for public engagement. EarthSpotter bridges this gap by offering accessible data visualization and a channel for public reporting of environmental pollution. If there is a viable legal solution for any pollution reported, EarthSpotter can identify a lawyer to help with the matter. I also work as an associate at Coast Law Group practicing Environmental Law.
USD's staff provides exceptional support and flexibility. For example, the EPIC Policy Clinic provided invaluable guidance, including developing key skills beyond legal research, like client work, project management, and teamwork. Additionally, USD funds unpaid internships, enabling students to pursue opportunities that might otherwise be financially out of reach.
Engaging with environmental nonprofits, think tanks, or community projects—such as advocating for new local ordinances or serving on a local board—demonstrates your commitment and sets you apart from students following a traditional academic path.
