Master of Arts in International Relations

Admissions requirements include:

• An undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university.
• Minimum 3.2 GPA.
• GRE not required.
• Official transcript showing the applicant's conferred bachelor's degree. Applicants who earned their bachelor's degree from an institution outside the United States must submit a course-by-course WES evaluation.
  • Institutions that can send secure electronic transcripts should send them to grads@sandiego.edu.
  • Official transcript(s) should show at least some academic preparation from courses in political science, history, economics and/or other subjects relevant to international affairs; students do not need to have majored in these fields as long as they have strong intellectual aptitude and demonstrated international interest.

For students who did their undergraduate work overseas, the university does require these two additional items:

1) a WES certification of your transcript and

2) an English language exam (either a TOEFL score of 90+ or an IELTS score of 7+).

You need to submit your online Graduate Admission application, which includes:

• A statement of purpose 600-800-word personal statement written in the first person that summarizes your educational, professional, and international experiences to date. The statement should answer these two sets of questions: 1) Why do you want to attend a master's program in International Relations and why do you want to attend USD in particular? and 2) What do you hope to gain from our program and what are your professional goals upon completing it?
• Writing sample.
• Current resume or CV.
• One letter of recommendation and the names of two additional references.
