Senior Teaching Professor, English

  • MFA, San Diego State University, Creative Writing
  • BA, University of Washington, English
  • BA, University of Washington, French

Deniz Perin-Coombs served as a Lecturer in the English Department from 2007-2016, and again since Fall 2018. From 2016 to 2018, she worked at the International Rescue Committee, where she taught Vocational ESL to newly arrived refugees, and Citizenship courses to refugees preparing for their naturalization tests. At USD, she teaches Creative Writing, Middle Eastern Literature, Poetry, and Composition & Literature, and College Writing. Her interests lie primarily in Creative Writing, and in modern and contemporary poetry and literature worldwide, but especially in the United States and Middle East. Her wish is to encourage students to respond to literature on many levels: analytically, personally, and creatively. She chooses books and assigns coursework that she hopes will remind students (if reminding is necessary) how enjoyable literature can be, and that literature is, in fact, viscerally connected to our lives.

Scholarly Work

Deniz Perin-Coombs has published poetry and prose in various literary journals, including Atlanta Review, Pacific Review, Runes, Sentence, Golden Handcuffs, The Raven Chronicles, Art Access, and Sou’wester, and in the anthology, A Year in Ink, Volume 2 (San Diego: Ink Spot Press, 2009). Her translations, from the Turkish, have appeared in The New Review of Literature, Words Without Borders, Atlanta Review, Basalt, Poetry International, and others. She translated Chapter 7 (“Nigar”) of Ayse Onal’s Honour Killing: Stories of Men Who Killed (London: Saqi, 2008). Her translation of Ece Temelkuran’s poetry collection, Book of the Edge, was published by BOA Editions. She has received a Lannan Foundation Residency Award and the Anna Akhmatova Fellowship for Younger Translators, and was semi-finalist for the National Translation Award.
