Biography

Soumaeil Azab, MA

Senior Teaching Professor and Director of Arabic

Professor Azab has extensive experience teaching Arabic language, literature, and culture in both lower and upper-division courses. He is well-versed in teaching in-person and virtually, with an emphasis on immersion in the target language. He teaches Arabic literature in translation and Arab American literature in English which enhances students' abilities to examine scholarship in the Arab World. He frequently lectures on Middle East history and culture. 

Professor Azab has a unique perspective gained from years of teaching Arabic to adults in accelerated learning environments. Prior to joining the faculty at USD, he was an Assistant Professor at the Defense Language Institute (DLI-FLC) in Monterey, California where he served as a team leader. At the DLI he was awarded the prestigious “Coin of Excellence” for his work in curriculum development. Professor Azab has also taught at Palomar College, where he was honored as “Professor of the Year”.

Areas of Interest

Professor Azab is skilled in oral proficiency testing, diagnostic assessment, and teaching cross-cultural competency. He served as a subject matter expert (SME) and instructor for 10 years at the Arabic Language and Culture Program at the Navy Special Warfare Command in San Diego (Coronado Base / Navy Seals). Professor Azab twice received Mortar Board recognition at USD for “academic excellence, superior leadership, and dedicated service.” He regularly offers students opportunities for authentic cultural field experiences. He also helped develop the Arabic Certificate Program which gives students special recognition for their completion of six semesters of Arabic.

Professor Azab gives students a greater understanding of the culture and civilization of the Arabic-speaking world, preparing them for international and domestic career opportunities.
