Asian Studies at USD prepares students to be global citizens by helping them develop a holistic understanding of Asia and its pivotal role in an increasingly globalized world. Designed to enhance students' majors, Asian Studies at USD provides foundational courses in Asian culture, language, history, religion, politics and economics.

Asian Studies Program Director Christopher Adler's recent work with the Lao/Northeast Thai bamboo mouth organ, khaen, includes the release of the CD Landscape Traces: New Music for Khaen, Volume Two, and the premiere of The Memories that Drift from Mountain Peaks, a new composition for Korean gayageum and khaen presented at USD in Spring 2023.

Meet Dr. Bahar Davary

Dr. Bahar Davary studies the poet-painter Sohrab Sepehri, whose body of work stands at the interrelation of religion, poetry, and ecology. In her newly published book Ecotheology and Love: The Converging Poetics of Sohrab Sepehri and James Baldwin, she interprets his poetry from a comparative perspective, with an emphasis on decoloniality, as a form of inter-religious engagement on care for the Earth.

Meet Kacie Miura

Kacie Miura, Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science and International Relations, recently wrote a policy report for the Wilson Center on the domestic sources of China's assertiveness in the South China Sea. The report details the implications for the maritime domain of Xi Jinping's efforts to recentralize foreign policy, and highlights how his efforts to increase his personal authority have shaped the incentive structure in which China's maritime actors operate.
