Prior to joining the faculty at USD, Professor Karen C. Burke was the
Dorsey & Whitney Professor of Law at the University of Minnesota
Law School, where she taught for 14 years. After graduating from
Stanford Law School, she clerked for Judge Robert E. Keeton of the
U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts and practiced
law with Sullivan & Worcester in Boston. Burke earned a
Ph.D. in history from Harvard University, and completed her undergraduate
work magna cum laude at Smith College. Burke
teaches and writes primarily in the area of federal income taxation.
Her recent articles include "Estate Tax Repeal: Through the Looking
Glass," (with Professor Grayson M.P. McCouch) Virginia Tax Review and "Contributions, Distributions and Assumption of Liabilities:
Confronting Economic Reality," Tax Lawyer. She has also published
several books in the area of corporate and partnership taxation.
Burke is a member of the American Law Institute, and
served as a consultant to the American Law Institute Federal
Income Tax Project-Taxation of Private Business Enterprises.
