Pain and Privilege in Peñasquitos: Student Involvement in Documentary Research
Faculty Research
$12,500

Description of Project:
University of San Diego students will participate in research for a proposed documentary under the supervision of faculty member, Dr. Gail Perez. They will work closely with Paul Espinosa and Mark Day, documentary filmmakers, on a promotional version of the story which can used to seek funding for an hour-long version. The recent beatings of elderly migrants by suburban youths from Rancho Peñasquitos in San Diego County will provide a story-line for explorations of the issues of racism, hate crimes, and youth violence. When the documentary is complete, a conference and educational web-site will provide the Trans-Border Institute an opportunity to showcase its involvement and support of this important project.

Effects of Female Size on Clutch, Egg, and Hatchling Sizes in the Olive Ridley Sea Turtle
Border Activity
$3,620

Description of Project:
The objective of this research is to evaluate whether optimal egg size (OES) theory is applicable to olive ridley sea turtles, Lepidochelys olivacea. This project will determine whether female size has influence on clutch, egg, or hatchling sizes. This project specifically addresses the following questions: Is there correlation between female size and clutch, egg, or hatching in L. olivacea? Do larger eggs produce larger hatchlings? Is there a trade-off between egg size and clutch size?

The Effect of Pollution on Intertidal Meiofaunal Communities in Bahía Magdalena, Mexico
Border Activity
$2,480

Description of Project:
The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of a fish cannery on the surrounding intertidal beach in Magdalena, Mexico. The cannery is discharging organic and inorganic waste onto the beach causing a noticeable effect on the environment (Sarabia pers. comm.). This project will describe and quantify the impact of this pollution on local meiofauna, the organisms that live between sediment grains. The magnitude of the effect will be determined by comparing the meifaunal community in the affected area near the cannery with those in other sandy beaches in Bahía Magdalena that are virtually isolated from any human impact.
