Who Can Join
the USD Symphony and Chamber Music Ensembles?
STUDENTS: You must be accepted
into USD first. Then, all students, regardless of their major(s)
or
minor(s) are eligible to audition.
HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS: High school
students with advanced musical training are welcome to participate as a
community member upon successful audition.
COMMUNITY MEMBERS: All
musicians not affiliated with USD are also welcome to participate if
positions
are open. Please contact Dr. Angela Yeung for an interview and audition.
N.B. Except for pianist and
percussion majors, all interested musicians who wish to join the USD
Symphony
and/or Chamber Music Ensembles must possess your own instrument.
When Are
Auditions?
Auditions are normally held several
days before the beginning of the fall and spring semester. Auditions
outside
the audition period are available if positions remain open. Please
contact Dr.
Yeung for special appointment.
What Do I Need
To Prepare for the Audition?
Audition requirements
are: three octaves of major and minor scales (by memory), two
pieces (or
movements) of contrasting style, and sight-reading a brief musical
excerpt.
The audition will last approximately
30 minutes. Arrive at least 10 minutes prior to your audition time to
tune and
warm up thoroughly.
How Do I Sign
Up For An Audition?
You can sign up for an audition
directly from this web site at Audition
Information.
Follow the step by step directions.
How Do I
Register After I Auditioned?
You cannot register for the USD
Symphony and/or the Chamber Music Ensembles on your own. Dr. Yeung
will
register for you after the successful completion of your
audition. No late
fee will apply. You may earn one credit per semester by enrolling
in the
USD Symphony, and an additional unit for enrolling in the Chamber Music
Ensembles.
What's the
Fine Print?
If you are a USD student, you must
register for credit. You cannot participate as a community member.
When and Where
Are Rehearsals?
USD Symphony rehearsals are held in
the Shiley Theatre at USD on Wednesday evenings from 7:15 to 9:45 p.m.
during
the academic year, with possible
extra dress
rehearsals immediately prior to a performance.
Chamber
Music Ensembles rehearsals
are held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:45 a.m.
to 12:05 p.m. during the fall and spring semester. Rehearsals outside
