Proposed action objective:
Improve and expand existing yet disparate internationalization activities to create new programs and partnerships for students, faculty, and curriculum by centralizing responsibility under a new Vice President/Vice Provost for Internationalization.

Contributes to Goal #1, “USD will become a more culturally diverse and culturally competent community through recruitment at all levels, deepening transborder and international educational partnerships, and involving students and faculty in international learning experiences,” by coordinating existing activities and creating new programs and partnerships.
Who is responsible for implementing and monitoring this objective?
An interim coordinator in the Provost’s Office will initially assume responsibility until the Vice President/Vice Provost for Internationalization is hired. The Vice President/Vice Provost will be supported by a core team of internationalization specialists across the university who will help to implement the programs.
What steps are necessary to achieve this objective?
- Appoint interim coordinator in Provost’s Office.
- Establish a core team of internationalization specialists from across the university.
- Draft position description for Vice President/Vice Provost for Internationalization.
- Identify components of the internationalization portfolio, which will include:
- an inventory of the current programs and their interrelationships
- possible reorganization of existing offices
- reallocation of existing funds
- new funding sources for programs, partnerships, and activities
- Hire Vice President/Vice Provost for Internationalization and implement reorganization.
- Vice President/Vice Provost and core team initiate a campus-wide dialogue about internationalization and use the findings to develop action plans to:
- coordinate study abroad programs
- internationalize curricula at all levels
- improve recruitment, services, and support for international students
- establish programs for faculty and staff development
- Begin implementing action plans in stages; actively seek funding through grants and contract opportunities.
What measurable indicator(s) can be used to monitor progress?
Suggested quantitative indicators include:
- Number of study abroad programs administered by USD, especially in less commonly visited countries.
- Number of formal partnerships between USD and international NGOs and international governmental organizations.
- Number of academic partnerships and institutional relationships with schools and colleges outside the United States.
- Number of international students, faculty, and visiting professors.
- Number of scholarships for students from abroad, especially from underdeveloped countries.
- Number of scholarships for USD students to study abroad.
- Amount of funding for faculty research/travel abroad.
- Amount of external funding secured for international programs.
