Irma Venegas was born and raised in Denver, Colorado. After receiving her B.A. in Ethnic Studies and Spanish at the University of San Diego she returned home to work as a Community Educator for Girls Inc. of Metro Denver, a non-profit organization. Over the past four years, Irma facilitated workshops, mentored youth and developed curricula. Her areas of specialization have been Health and Sexuality, Teen Pregnancy Prevention and College Preparatory Programming. During her graduate program in the Higher Education Leadership she will be working as a Graduate Assistant in the Student Leadership and Involvement Center where she will be advising students, coordinating campus events and working closely with student organizations. Shahla Akbari is originally from Lafayette, California and moved to San Diego after completing her Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication at the University of California, Santa Barbara. During her enrollment, Shahla found a passion for educational leadership through her involvement as a mentor for the school’s Family Literacy Program, working as a Research Assistant, and her role as a founding officer of the local chapter of the Lambda Pi Eta Honors Society. Her professional experience includes retail business management and, most recently, working with undergraduate students as a Volunteer Coordinator and Recruiter in the nonprofit sector.
