Global Center

At the University of San Diego, the School of Leadership and Education Science's SOLES Global Center contributes to the education of graduate professionals who engage other cultures, are sensitive to commonalities and differences among and within cultures, understand multiple perspectives and the impact of global transformations, and are committed to positive change.

A thorough internationalization strategy serves to meet the above goals while increasing the students' knowledge in their own fields. This strategy includes the recruitment of students and faculty from around the world to support exchanges of ideas among international and domestic students and faculty on different cultures; global education programs ranging from short-term study; the internalization of curriculum to bring the world to the classroom; and a full range of events including lectures, conferences, visiting scholars, and festivals to further integrate global perspectives into SOLES.

Global Faculty Grant Recipients

We are pleased to announce the Spring 2012 recipients of Global Center Faculty Grant.

  • Dr.  Heather Latimmer
  • Dr. Todd M. Edwards
  • Dr.  Sarina Chugani  Molina
  • Dr.  C. Bobbi Hansen

Dr. Lattimer’s project is a case study which explores the viability and impact of learner-centered, emancipatory pedagogies.  The research explores the impact on students and teachers at Daraja Academy, a Kenyan secondary school.

Dr. Molina is carrying out a study which will result in the publication of an article in a refereed journal. The study is a survey of international students who have recently graduated from the University of San Diego’s TESOL program and those currently within the program.

Dr. Hansen’s project is entitled “Internationalizing the Credential Curriculum: An Examination of the Efficacy of Practices and Training Paradigms by a Teacher Education Department to Produce Globally Competent Teachers.”  This project is expected to result in a refereed journal article examining the Department of Learning and Teaching’s implementation of a strategic goal to produce globally competent teachers.

Dr.Edwards is co-authoring a book chapter entitled “Multimorbidity in Primary Care Mental Health” for an edited book entitled Companion to Primary Care Mental Health, which will be published by Radcliffe in 2012.

We wish all the recipients of the grant a successful project, and look forward to seeing fruitful outcomes.

International Partner of the Year:

Led by Assistant Professor Joi Spencer, a team of graduate students from SOLES recently traveled to Ghana, West Africa to conduct academic needs assessments and to provide teacher professional development in affordable private schools.

The initiative was the result of a special invitation from the OMEGA Schools (SOLES International Partner of the Year), and from other schools that receive microloans from Edify.

The efforts culminated in a formal presentation of research findings and recommendations for OMEGA and Edify’s leadership, and in a professional development conference for educators.

“This conference hosted over 120 teachers engaging them in inquiry-based classroom practices and providing information on how to address the nutritional needs of their students,” says Dr. Spencer. “The teachers indicated that the takeaways were practical and doable, and we strongly believe that our larger findings can be applied to change at scale,” adds Nathaniel Dunigan, a SOLES PhD student who participated.

The team worked together with a similar team from the School of Business, led by Associate Professor Patricia Marquez. The SOLES team also included Jennifer Edstrom (Masters, L&T), Melodie Miranda (ELDA), and Raketa Thomas (Masters, L&T).
